Qin B, Qiu W, Avramoglu RK, Adeli K. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha induces intestinal insulin resistance and stimulates the overproduction of intestinal apolipoprotein B48-containing lipoproteins. Diabetes 2007; 56:450-461. TNF-α infusion was found to directly stimulate lipoprotein secretion and intestinal insulin resistance in the hamster. These data appear to clearly suggest that increased inflammatory factors may play an important role in dysregulation of intestinal insulin signaling and lipoprotein metabolism.

Duez H, Lamarche B, Valero R, et al. Intestinal as well as hepatic lipoprotein production is stimulated by an acute elevation of plasma FFAs in humans. Circulation (in press). In this study that employed stable isotope enrichment of apolipoproteins and multicompartmental kinetic modeling the authors demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that intestinal lipoprotein production is stimulated by an acute elevation of plasma free fatty acids. This observation confirms that the production of intestinal triglyceride-rich lipoproteins is regulated by fatty acids derived from the circulation and provides one potential mechanism for the increased production rate of these lipoproteins in insulin-resistant states.
