    • 13C NMR data of the resultant phenanthridine with the literature data allowed stereochemical assignment. [This result was in good accord with the strong NOE observed across the ring junction in all analogues.]

    • The identity of these minor products as double bond isomers was confirmed when a mixture of 7-9a was treated under hydrogenation conditions to give one saturated product. Each of these double bond isomers was also fully characterized by extensive COSY, HSQC and 2D NOESY NMR following separation by HPLC.
