-
Miyazaki S, Tsuda H, Sakai M, et al. Predominance of Th2-promoting dendritic cells in early human pregnancy decidua. J Leukoc Biol 2003; 74:514-522. The majority of dendritic cells in the normal human placenta are myeloid, rather than plasmacytoid, and they preferentially induce Th2 differentiation by naïve T cells. This may contribute to the Th2 skewed environment of pregnancy.

IL-6 production by pulmonary dendritic cells impedes Th1 immune responses

Dodge IL, Carr MW, Cernadas M, Brenner MB. IL-6 production by pulmonary dendritic cells impedes Th1 immune responses. J Immunol 2003; 170:4457-4464. Cates EC, Gajewska BU, Goncharova S, et al. Effect of GM-CSF on immune, inflammatory, and clinical responses top ragweed in a novel mouse model of mucosal sensitization. J Allergy Clin Immunol 2003; 111:1076-1086. This study examines the role of GM-CSF in mucosal sensitization to a clinically relevant allergen, using an experimental system that is not dependent on intraperitoneal adjuvant.

The proteolytic activity of the major dust mite allergen Der p 1 conditions dendritic cells to produce less interleukin-12: Allergen-induced Th2 bias determined at the dendritic cell level
-
Ghaemmaghami AM, Gough L, Sewell HF, Shakib F. The proteolytic activity of the major dust mite allergen Der p 1 conditions dendritic cells to produce less interleukin-12: allergen-induced Th2 bias determined at the dendritic cell level. Clin Exp Allergy 2002; 32:1468-1475. The enzymatic properties of the mite allergen Der p 1 cleave CD40 from the surface of dendritic cells, reducing their ability to synthesize IL-12, and enhancing Th2 cytokine production. It will be interesting to see if these effects differ in dendritic cells from allergic compared with nonallergic individuals.

Bidirectional interactions between antigen-bearing respiratory tract dendritic cells (DCs) and T-cells precede the late phase reaction in experimental asthma: DC activation occurs in the airway mucosa but not in the lung parenchyma

Huh JC, Strickland DH, Jahnsen FL, et al. Bidirectional interactions between antigen-bearing respiratory tract dendritic cells (DCs) and T-cells precede the late phase reaction in experimental asthma: DC activation occurs in the airway mucosa but not in the lung parenchyma. J Exp Med 2003; 198:19-30. First study to dissect out the differential effects of inhaled allergen on airway versus parenchymal lung dendritic cells. Cognate interactions between antigen loaded dendritic cells and memory T cells leads to rapid maturation of dendritic cell function within 2 h of allergen exposure.
