Roberts CK, Vaziri ND, Barnard RJ. Effect of diet and exercise intervention on blood pressure, oxidative stress and nitric oxide availability. Circulation 2002; 106:2530-2532. Effect of diabetes insulin and antioxidants on NO synthase abundance and NO interaction with reactive oxygen species
-
Koo JR, Vaziri ND. Effect of diabetes insulin and antioxidants on NO synthase abundance and NO interaction with reactive oxygen species. Kidney Int 2003; 63:195-201. This study demonstrated that molecular targets of oxidative stress shift dramatically among untreated and insulin-treated diabetic animals, thus high-lighting the need to explore multiple markers in an assessment of oxidative stress in this and perhaps other conditions. The study further showed that when given in conjunction with insulin, antioxidant therapy can afford significant benefit in diabetic animals.

Melatonin reduces renal interstitial inflammation and improves hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats
-
Nava M, Quiroz Y, Vaziri ND, et al. Melatonin reduces renal interstitial inflammation and improves hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 2003; 284:447-454. This study demonstrated an upregulation of NFκB and an accumulation of activated T cells, macrophages, superoxide-producing and angiotensin 2-positive cells in the tubulointerstitial region of the SHR kidney. The study further showed a substantial improvement in hypertension together with a reversal of these changes with antioxidant therapy (melatonin). The study thus established the role of oxidative stress in renal inflammation in SHRs.
