    • This study reports that the phosphorylation of a cluster of amino acids in the SRF MADS box DNA-binding domain regulated the transcription of genes associated with proliferation or terminal muscle differentiation. The phosphorylation status of serine-162 constitutes a novel switch that directs target gene expression into proliferation or differentiation programs and influence the expression of sarcomeric gene programs and miRNAs.

    • This study reports that knockout of the mouse cardiac-specific microRNA, miR-208, encoded by an intron of the alphaMHC gene is required for cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, fibrosis, and expression of betaMHC in response to stress and hypothyroidism. The alphaMHC gene, in addition to encoding a major cardiac contractile protein, regulates cardiac growth and gene expression in response to stress and hormonal signaling through miR-208.

    • This paper reports that the conditional knockout of Dicer in the heart showed that miRNA biogenesis in the mouse heart is essential for cardiogenesis. The mouse knockout of the muscle-specific miRNA, miR-1-2, revealed numerous functions in the heart, including regulation of cardiac morphogenesis, electrical conduction, and cell cycle control. miR-1-2 deletion revealed an enrichment of miR-1 'seed matches' and a strong tendency for potential miR-1-binding sites to be located in physically accessible regions.
