Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2007. The investigators study the presence of CTX-M ESBLs among commensal E. coli strains found in Peruvian and Bolivian children, healthy and from remote areas presumably isolated from the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. They demonstrate the presence of a new variant of CTX-M-2 and report the new fluoroquinolone resistance gene aac(6′)-Ib-cr for the first time in South America.
