    • Essential role of the main olfactory system in social recognition of major histocompatibility complex peptide ligands
    • The authors provide the first demonstration that nonvolatile peptidergic cues are detected by the mouse main olfactory epithelium. This paper also establishes that mammalian OSNs are much more sensitive than previously thought. Together with the seminal discovery in the VNO [11] this work provides evidence for parallel processing of overlapping sets of chemosignals by the main and accessory olfactory systems.

    • It is still possible to discover novel G-protein coupled receptors in the mammalian nose. The authors find that trace-amine associated receptors (TAARs) are expressed by unique subsets of sensory neurons in the main olfactory epithelium. Ligands identified for TAARs thus far suggest a function associated with the detection of social cues such as pheromones.

It is still possible to discover novel G-protein coupled receptors in the mammalian nose. The authors find that trace-amine associated receptors (TAARs) are expressed by unique subsets of sensory neurons in the main olfactory epithelium. Ligands identified for TAARs thus far suggest a function associated with the detection of social cues such as pheromones.

    • Using a mouse strain in which GFP is driven by the TRPM5 promoter, the authors identify previously unrecognized subpopulations of OSNs in the MOE and map their projections to the olfactory bulb. Some GFP-positive glomeruli responded to stimulation with pheromonal ligands such as MTMT and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine.

    • The authors measured the salivary levels of the hormone cortisol in women after smelling pure androstadienone, a component of male sweat. This treatment resulted in significantly higher cortisol levels. Thus, like rodents, hormonal balance in humans can be influenced by the sensing of conspecific chemosignals.
