By its physical meaning, L must be positive in any stable system, which means that the integral in eq 27 must be positive. We are unaware of any theorem giving an independent proof that it always is. Somehow, if plugging in data for ε(k) or h̃, k, h̃, k, and h, k) one obtained negative values of L, that would be an obvious problem. It may lie either with the inaccuracy of the data or rather the basic formula (eq 27, Really, in order to preserve the positive response (positive capacitance) typical for a stable system, the properties of the liquid near the interface will have to change to readjust its structure to warrant the system stability. Furthermore, getting L positive but very small, i.e, capacitance huge, would be unphysical, and probably, the system corrects this automatically in a heterogeneous mode of response. 46
