Structural basis for histone and phosphohistone binding by the GCN5 histone acetyltransferase
-
This paper reports the structures of tGCN5 bound to histone H3 and Ser10ph histone H3 peptides bearing Lys14, and provides insights into the mechanisms by which this HAT preferentially acetylates this site. The phospho-histone H3 complex also elucidates how one histone modification can influence subsequent modifications at proximal sites.

Structural basis for the methylation site specificity of SET7/9
-
This article presents the structure of SET7/9 in complex with AdoHcy and a TAF10 peptide, as well as a comprehensive analysis of its methylation site specificity. These results permitted the authors to identify a consensus recognition motif for methylation by SET7/9, which was subsequently used in a sequence database search to identify new putative substrates of this PKMT.

Regulation of p53 activity through lysine methylation
-
In this paper, the authors report the methylation of p53 by SET7/9 and describe how methylation affects the functions of this tumor suppressor. The work includes the structure of SET7/9 bound to a p53 peptide, revealing a conserved mechanism by which SET7/9 recognizes and methylates its substrates.
