    • Owing to the relatively high atomic number of the particles, the scattering of X-rays from these monolayers is strong, although calculations suggest that the gold layer is not thick enough to shield the underlying water substrate. It is also important to note that particles shadow each other at all incident angles used in these measurements. This is supported by a simple geometric argument and justifies the comparison of experimentally determined electron density profiles to smeared layer box models.
