    • The term "opals" is utilized here because of the direct comparison of these nanocrystal superlattice structures to naturally occurring opals, which are also colloidal crystals. However, in naturally occurring opals, the size of the individual particles, and the corresponding d-spacings within the extended structure, are in the size range 0.1 -1 μm, and hence "opalescence" is the Bragg diffraction of light.
