SHG signals from static Langmuir monolayers were measured over time to ascertain whether the laser was damaging the monolayers. The signal was very stable for all time periods investigated (up to 20 min), and optical microscopic inspection of the illuminated spot revealed no evidence of film damage. Indeed, the monolayers could be redissolved in hexane after the experiments were carried out.
