    • The liquid-crystalline and thermal properties of 14, G3, 15, G4, and 16 were examined by polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In all cases, the optical textures obtained from cooling the samples from the isotropic phase were characteristic of columnar mesophases. The transition temperatures are indicated in the Experimental Section.
