    • In cases in which simple saturated hydrocarbons are oxidized, for example, by ionizing radiation, or if they are studied computationally, their structure resembles nonclassical carbocations. This can be rationalized by considering the similar energy level of the carbon-carbon single bonds that can lead to strong overlap of the unoccupied orbital with the occupied o-orbitals of the carbon-carbon single bonds.
