Calmodulin kinase II inhibition protects against structural heart disease
-
Zhang R, Khoo MS, Wu Y, et al. Calmodulin kinase II inhibition protects against structural heart disease. Nat Med 2005; 11:409-417. This is the first study that has provided a tenable link between excitation and contraction coupling in the heart. The authors demonstrated that inhibition of CaMKII prevented hypertrophy, arrhythmias, and sudden death in a mouse model. The findings of this study provide a novel approach for developing new antiarrhythmic drugs targeting molecules such as CaMKII.

Prevention of atrial fibrillation with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers: A meta-analysis
-
Healey JS, Baranchuk A, Crystal E, et al. Prevention of atrial fibrillation with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers: a meta-analysis. J Am Coll Cardiol 2005; 45:1832-1839. This meta-analysis of 11 randomized studies involving 56 308 patients suggests that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers markedly reduce the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, though the benefit appears to be limited to patients with systolic left ventricular dysfunction or left ventricular hypertrophy.
