That this separation of the cluster compounds is reasonable becomes obvious, when the bonding situation in these two classes of cluster compounds is observed. In the case of the ligand stabilized cluster compounds the bonding situation is best described as localized homoatomic bonds. In the case of the Zintl ions the bonding electrons in the cluster core are highly delocalized and every germanium atom is expected to bear a lone pair of electrons [4].
