Hypoxia induces adhesion molecules on cancer cells: A missing link between Warburg effect and induction of selectin-ligand carbohydrates
-
X/a in cancer. This study demonstrates that the 'Warburg effect' (metabolic shift from oxidative to elevated anaerobic glycolysis to cope with hypoxic environments) results in the upregulation of a set of glycosylation-related genes via the enhanced expression of hypoxia inducible factors.

Steeghs L, van Vliet SJ, Uronen-Hansson H, van Mourik A, Engering A, Sanchez-Hernandez M, Klein N, Callard R, van Putten JPM, van der Ley P et al.: Neisseria meningitidis expressing lgtB lipopolysaccharide targets DC-SIGN and modulates dendritic cell function. Cell Microbiol 2005, in press. Lipopolysaccharide from an oligosaccharide mutant Neisseria meningitidis expressing truncated outer core glycans exhibited strong adhesion and internalization to DCs via DC-SIGN. In this case, the activation of DC-SIGN skewed T cell responses driven by DCs towards T helper 1 activity, whereas the wild-type form induced a Th2-like cytokine profile.
