Aravind Comparative genomics of the FtsK-HerA superfamily of pumping ATPases: implications for the origins of chromosome segregation, cell division and viral capsid packaging Nucleic Acids Res 32 2004 5260 5279 This study applies a variety of computational analysis methods to show that the archaeal HerA helicase belongs to the same protein superfamily as the bacterial ATPase FtsK, which is responsible for DNA pumping during chromosomal segregation. The nearly complementary patterns of phyletic distribution of HerA and FtsK suggests that these proteins are orthologs and that HerA plays an analogous role in archaea in cooperation with the NurA nuclease and, possibly, the archaeal orthologs of the eukaryotic MRE11 and Rad50 proteins.
