Kakutani One-way control of FWA imprinting in Arabidopsis endosperm by DNA methylation Science 303 2004 521 523 This study demonstrates that the FWA gene is specifically de-methylated in the endosperm in a manner that is dependent on the DEMETER glycosylase. Because the endosperm is an extra-embryonic tissue, this mechanism allows for developmental control of FWA expression without jeopardizing the stable inheritance of DNA methylation at the locus.

Carrington Evolution of microRNA genes by inverted duplication of target gene sequences in Arabidopsis thaliana Nat Genet 36 2004 1282 1290 The authors present evidence indicating that two Arabidopsis miRNA genes have recently evolved from inverted duplications of target genes and propose this as a general mechanism for the evolution of miRNA genes. Such a mechanism suggests that miRNA-mediated control of development evolved from the siRNA-mediated genome defense system.

    • DNA methylation profiling identifies CG methylation clusters in Arabidopsis genes
    • R.K. Tran, J.G. Henikoff, D. Zilberman, R.F. Ditt, S.E. Jacobsen, and S. Henikoff DNA methylation profiling identifies CG methylation clusters in Arabidopsis genes Curr Biol 15 2005 154 159 The authors report the identification of short stretches of methylated CG sites that are preferentially found within transcribed portions of Arabidopsis genes. Evidence is presented that these clusters have been arising and disappearing over sufficient stretches of evolutionary time to skew the frequency of CG dinucleotides within the genome.
