There is a body of data in the neurological literature indicating that erythropoietin can protect neurones from a variety of proapoptotic stimuli in vitro and in vivo and this work is now being extended to the renal field. This study demonstrates that recombinant erythropoietin protects human proximal tubular cells from undergoing apoptosis in vitro and ameliorates renal injury in a model of murine ischaemia-reperfusion injury.

The serum amyloid P knockout mouse exhibits an autoimmune phenotype that varies with the background genetic strain.
