Erythropoietin protects the kidney against the injury and dysfunction caused by ischemia-reperfusion
-
Sharples EJ, Patel N, Brown P, et al. Erythropoietin protects the kidney against the injury and dysfunction caused by ischemia-reperfusion. J Am Soc Nephrol 2004; 15:2115-2124. There is a body of data in the neurological literature indicating that erythropoietin can protect neurones from a variety of proapoptotic stimuli in vitro and in vivo and this work is now being extended to the renal field. This study demonstrates that recombinant erythropoietin protects human proximal tubular cells from undergoing apoptosis in vitro and ameliorates renal injury in a model of murine ischaemia-reperfusion injury.

Autoimmunity and glomerulonephritis in mice with targeted deletion of the serum amyloid P component gene: SAP deficiency or strain combination?
-
Gillmore JD, Hutchinson WL, Herbert J, et al. Autoimmunity and glomerulonephritis in mice with targeted deletion of the serum amyloid P component gene: SAP deficiency or strain combination? Immunology 2004; 112:255-264. This study reinforces the importance of the background genetic strain of mice when analysing the phenotype of genetically modified mice. The serum amyloid P knockout mouse exhibits an autoimmune phenotype that varies with the background genetic strain.
