New antimicrobials in the management of cystic fibrosis
-
Høiby N: New antimicrobials in the management of cystic fibrosis. J Antimicrob Chemother (2002) 49(2):235-238. This review describes the occurrence of biofilms in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients and examines the protective nature of the biofilm in the context of the host immune response. For example, the production of alginate by mucoid strains protects the biofilm cells from antibodies and T-cells.

Labbate M, Queck SY, Koh KS, Rice SA, Givskov M, Kjelleberg S: Quorum sensing-controlled biofilm development in Serraita liquefaciens MG1. J Bacteriol (2004) 186(3):692-698. Three parallel quorum-sensing systems regulate gene expression in Vibrio harveyi
-
Henke JM, Bassler BL: Three parallel quorum-sensing systems regulate gene expression in Vibrio harveyi. J Bacteriol (2004) 186(20):6902-6914. The authors compared the quorum-sensing systems of V harveyi and V cholerae. Significantly, they showed that V harveyi has three integrated signaling pathways and identified a small RNA as the LuxO controlled inhibitor of LuxR synthesis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing as a potential antimicrobial target

Smith RS, Iglewski BH: Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing as a potential antimicrobial target. J Clin Invest (2003) 112(10):1460-1465. This review presents a summary of how quorum sensing is related to virulence of P aeruginosa and compares three separate DNA array studies that have investigated the quorum response of P aeruginosa. Furthermore, approaches used or proposed for the control of quorum sensing in P aeruginosa are described; both published and unpublished results are discussed.

Attenuation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence by quorum sensing inhibitors
-
Hentzer M, Wu H, Andersen JB, Riedel K, Rasmussen TB, Bagge N, Kumar N, Schembri MA, Song Z, Kristoffersen P, Manefield M et al: Attenuation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence by quorum sensing inhibitors. EMBO J (2003) 22(15):3803-3815. This study investigated, using DNA microarrays, the specificity of furanones as inhibitors of the AHL system in P aeruginosa. Furthermore, it is shown that furanone treatment of infected mice results in a 3-log reduction in the total number of P aeruginosa associated with the lungs compared with controls. The concentration of compound used was not growth inhibitory to the bacteria.
