This article describes a real-time assessment of serum iron concentrations and HAMP excretion in human volunteers after infusion with IL-6 and after an oral iron dose. That HAMP excretion and serum iron are elevated immediately after an oral iron dose and then return to normal within days is consistent with the hypothesized mucosal block.

    • Adamsky K, Weizer O, Amariglio N, et al. Decreased hepcidin mRNA expression in thalassemic mice. Br J Haematol 2004; 124:123-124. This article describes reduced Hamp expression in thalassemic mice, despite hepatic iron loading. As for the hypotransferrinemic mice described in [7], this result indicates that Hamp is more responsive to the erythropoietic drive than hepatic iron stores.

Insufficient Hamp induction in response to lipopolysaccharide in Hfe-/- mice may explain the diminished response.
