Nie In vivo cancer targeting and imaging with semiconductor quantum dots Nat Biotechnol 22 2004 969 976 Reports a new class of multifunctional QD probes for simultaneous tumor targeting and imaging in live animal models. The structural design involves encapsulating luminescent QDs with an amphiphilic triblock copolymer, and linking this amphiphilic polymer to tumor-targeting ligands and drug delivery functionalities. In vivo targeting studies of human prostate cancer growing in nude mice indicate that the QD probes can be delivered to tumor sites by both enhanced permeation and retention and through antibody binding to cancer-specific cell-surface biomarkers.
