    • The question why the (3 × 3) phase does not manifest itself with STM at 6 K is still under discussion. Possible artifacts related to the measurement should be considered. Indeed, it has been recently reported that the apparent observation of symmetric dimers at very low temperatures (<10 K) in the closely related Si(100) system is due to the STM imaging mechanism (Ref. 38).
