    • Mechanism of the distance-dependent scaling of Schaffer collateral synapses in rat CA1 pyramidal neurons
    • Smith, M. A., Ellis-Davies, G. C. & Magee, J. C. Mechanism of the distance-dependent scaling of Schaffer collateral synapses in rat CA1 pyramidal neurons. J. Physiol. (Lond.) 546, 245-258 (2003). This study shows that synaptic strength increases as a function of distance from the soma, indicating that there is a form of 'distance-dependent scaling' of synaptic strength in hippocampal neurons. This might compensate for reduced synaptic efficacy as a function of electrotonic distance from the spike-initiation zone.

    • Williams, S. R. & Stuart, G. J. Dependence of EPSP efficacy on synapse location in neocortical pyramidal neurons. Science 295, 1907-1910 (2002). This study indicates that, in neocortical neurons, synaptic strength does not increase as a function of distance from the soma. This is in contrast to experiments in hippocampal neurons (see reference 106).
