This study demonstrates that the neuroprotective or neurotoxic nature of the effects of cyclosporine depends on both the cyclosporine and oxygen concentrations. The results also imply that cyclosporine-induced neurotoxicity and neuroprotection during hypoxia/reperfusion may both be caused by inhibition of calcium traffic through the mitochondrial membrane.

This study demonstrates that application of cyclosporine to rat liver mitochondria in contact with calcium induced both an accumulation of calcium and a decrease in oxidative phosphorylation. The interaction of cyclosporine with mitochondrial calcium fluxes is probably the first event that triggers all the metabolic changes described in this review.
