    • L-A virus at 3.4 Å resolution reveals particle architecture and mRNA decapping mechanism
    • The dsRNA L-A virus resembles the T=1 inner core of BTV and lacks the T=13 outer shell of subunits. The surface of the L-A virus catalyzes the removal of 7-methyl guanine caps from cellular mRNA molecules. The structure revealed the active site where the cap is removed and is covalently attached to a histidine residue in the L-A subunit

    • Structure of dengue virus: Implications for flavivirus organization, maturation, and fusion
    • Cryo-EM reconstruction of the dengue flavivirus. The glycoprotein E crystal structure from closely related tick-borne encephalitis virus was fitted into the EM density to produce a pseudo-atomic model. Although 180 copies of the E protein are present in the outer icosahedral shell, they do not conform to the expected T=3 quasi-equivalent organization. Instead, 90 dimers of the E protein are arranged in a 'herringbone' pattern on the surface. The inner nucleoprotein core contained within a lipid bilayer is apparently somewhat variable in orientation or less ordered. Based upon the pseudo-atomic model of the outer shell, membrane fusion mechanisms are discussed

    • Structures of immature flavivirus particles
    • Immature forms of dengue and yellow fever flaviviruses were obtained by inhibiting a critical cleavage stage. Consequently, the pre-membrane protein is still present. This protein appears to prevent membrane-active E proteins from being exposed prematurely. The organization of E proteins differs dramatically from that observed in mature dengue virus; the virus must thus undergo large-scale conformational changes to go from an immature to a mature, infectious form

    • Analysis of rapid, large-scale protein quaternary structural changes: Time-resolved X-ray solution scattering of Nudaurelia capensis omega virus (NomegaV) maturation
    • The kinetics of a large-scale, pH-linked conformational change in the ssRNA insect tetravirus NωV was examined by SSAXS. An upper bound of ∼100 ms for the transition was determined. Time-resolved scattering data suggested the existence of a distinct intermediate species. The virus was also titrated as a function of pH and the transition was found to occur over a narrow 0.7 pH unit window
