    • The Au wires are cleaned in 30% hydrogen peroxide followed by a rinse in deionized water and ethanol. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of OPE is deposited on one wire by immersing it for 24-48 h in a 1 mM tetrahydrofuran solution of the compound. The SAM-covered wire is then rinsed with tetrahydrofuran and ethanol and dried in a nitrogen stream. Infrared external reflectance spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry of similarly prepared SAMs on flat substrates confirmed the formation of a densely packed monolayer with the molecular axis close to the surface normal. Full details of the monolayer characterization as well as compound synthesis will be reported elsewhere.
