    • Deng C, Lu Q, Zhang Z, et al. Hydralazine may induce autoimmunity by inhibiting extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathway signaling. Arthritis Rheum 2003; 48:746-756. This study unravels the underlying mechanism of the SLE-inducing properties of hydralazine and procainamide, as these drugs interfere with the ERK pathway and thus inhibit methyltransferase activity. Drug-induced lupus may thus have a similar signalling defect as idiopathic lupus.

    • Delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to paraphenylenediamine is mediated by 2 different pathways of antigen recognition by specific alphabeta human T-cell clones
    • Sieben S, Kawabuko Y, Al Masaoudi T, et al. Delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to paraphenylenediamine is mediated by 2 different pathways of antigen recognition by specific alphabeta human T-cell clones. J Allergy Clin Immunol 2002; 109:1005-1011. Paraphenylendiamine is a classical contact sensitizer. It was hitherto thought that an autoxidation product (Bandrowski's base) induces the reaction. The study suggests two distinct pathways of antigen presentation exist to activate the immune response to paraphenylendiamine, namely a direct recognition of paraphenylendiamine by T cells through a processing-independent pathway and a processing and possibly metabolism-dependent pathway leading to recognition of Bandrowski's base.
