Various unpublished experiments have shown the preference of lead binding to glass. Since the matrix dissolution was performed in a glass apparatus, we postulate that lead is partially bound to the glass, thus changing the Pb/Cd ratio, leaving a higher percentage of cadmium in the NPs.

The ratios of alcoholic solution vs. aqueous solution were taken in such a way as to assure no precipitation occurred when mixing the hydrocarbon-methanol solution with pure water. Thus, we ensured that when replacing water with the aqueous salt solution, only precipitation of the hydrocarbon salt would occur, and we thus avoided to have the pure hydrocarbon as a by-product.
