This paper documents that a cyanobacterial protein, predicted from whole genome sequencing (REF. 84) to have an amino-terminal phytochrome photosensory domain and a carboxyl-terminal histidine-kinase domain, does indeed function in vitro as a light-regulated sensor histidine kinase, which is capable of transphosphorylation of its presumptive cognate response regulator in a classical prokaryotic two-component fashion.
