Horizontal gene transfer among genomes: The complexity hypothesis
-
Through analysis of orthologous genes from the complete genomes of six prokaryotes, the authors have provided evidence supporting a continual process of lateral gene transfer among bacterial species since their divergence, rather than a few massive exchanges events. This underscores the importance of horizontal gene transfer in bacterial evolution

D-Ala-D-Ala ligases from glycopeptide antibiotic-producing organisms are highly homologous to the enterococcal vancomycin-resistance ligases VanA and VanB

Although a direct transfer event remains to be observed, this report provides substantial support to the notion that antibiotic-producing organisms may be a source for some of the resistance determinants identified in clinical isolates

A periplasmic D-alanyl-D alanine dipeptidase in the Gram-negative bacterium Salmonella enterica
-
A D-Ala-D-Ala dipeptidase, PcgL, with a substrate profile similar to the VanX protein involved in vancomycin resistance in Enterococci, is identified in the periplasm of Salmonella enterica. However, its activity is not related to antibiotic resistance or virulence. Furthermore, the marked difference in GC content between the gene coding for the dipepetidase and the rest of the Salmonella chromosome suggests its acquisition by a horizontal gene-transfer event
