Cigarette smoking is associated with dose-related and potentially reversible impairment of endothelium-dependent dilation in healthy young adults
-
3 Celermajer DS, Sorensen KE, Georgakopoulos D, Bull C, Thomas O, Robinson J, et al. Cigarette smoking is associated with dose-related and potentially reversible impairment of endothelium-dependent dilation in healthy young adults. Circulation 1993; 88:2149-2155. This study conducted in 80 current smokers, 40 former smokers and 80 control subjects, showed that endothelium-dependent flow-mediated vasodilation was inversely related to lifetime dose smoked. Abnormal flow-mediated vasodilation was shown to be potentially reversible.

Purification and characterization of particulate endothelium-derived relaxing factor synthase from cultured and native bovine aortic endothelial cells. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1991; 88:10480-10484. This work characterized the endothelial cell NOS enzyme, including its Michaelis-Menten constant. Results from this work helped to create the controversy over the utility of providing excess L-arginine to enhance EDNO activity. This controversy became known as the 'Arginine Paradox'.

Dietary L-arginine reduces the progression of atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits: Comparison with lovastatin
-
69 Böger RH, Bode-Böger SM, Brandes RP, Phivthong-ngam L, Bohme M, Nafe R, et al. Dietary L-arginine reduces the progression of atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits: comparison with lovastatin. Circulation 1997; 96:1282-1290. This study confirmed earlier work which showed that L-arginine can inhibit the progression of atherosclerotic lesion formation in experimental hypercholesterolemia. In this study, L-arginine was more effective than lovastatin at inhibiting the progression of atherosclerosis. In addition, L-arginine inhibited, while lovastatin potentiated superoxide radical generation.
