Exacerbated febrile responses to LPS, but not turpentine, in TNF double receptor-knockout mice
-
Leon LR, Kozak W, Peschon J, Kluger MJ. Exacerbated febrile responses to LPS, but not turpentine, in TNF double receptor-knockout mice. Am J Physiol 1997; 272:R563-R569. A high dose of LPS resulted in exacerbated fevers in double TNF-α receptor-knockout mice compared with wild-type mice for the early and late phases of fever. A low dose of LPS, however, caused the same febrile reaction in both knockout and wild-type animals, suggesting that TNF-α modulates fevers to LPS dose dependently. In addition, TNF-α does not modulate fevers to a subcutaneous injection of turpentine.

Multiple cytokines and acute inflammation raise mouse leptin levels: Potential role of inflammatory anorexia
-
Sarraf P, Frederich RC, Turner EM, Ma G, Jaskowiak NT, Rivet DJ III, et al. Multiple cytokines and acute inflammation raise mouse leptin levels: potential role of inflammatory anorexia. J Exp Med 1997; 185:171-175. Administration of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1 to mice results in increases in both serum leptin levels and leptin gene expression in fat, suggesting that leptin may represent one mechanism by which anorexia is induced during acute inflammatory conditions.
