Thermolabile variant of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase associated with low red cell folates: Implications for folate intake recommendations
-
Molloy AM, Daly S, Mills JL, Kirke PN, Whitehead AS, Ramsbottom D, et • al. Thermolabile variant of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase associated with low red cell folates: implications for folate intake recommendations. Lancet 1997; 349:1591-1593. This newly described mutation, resulting in mild hyperhomocysteinaemia, in pregnancy, is associated with a lower folate level even in the heterozygote state. This has implications for the management of folate deficiency and the prevention of neural tube defect, as well as potentially for the prevention of thromoembolism.
