    • Elevated circulating free fatty acid levels impair endothelium-dependent vasodilation
    • Steinberg HO, Tarshoby M, Monestel R, Hook G, Cronin J, Johnson A, Bayazeed B, Baron AD: Elevated circulating free fatty acid levels impair endothelium-dependent vasodilation. J Clin Invest 1997, 100:1230-1239. This study was designed as a follow-up to the demonstration that obesity and dyslipidemia might exert an important confounding influence on endothelial function in metabolic disease (J Clin Invest 1996, 97:2601-2610). In healthy individuals, free fatty acids were infused in the presence of somatostatin (to inhibit systemic insulin release) and endothelial dysfunction ensued. When insulin levels were restored, endothelial function was normalized. These results suggest that circulating free fatty acids may play an important role in blunting endothelial function.
