J Rheumatol 1997, 24:2177-2187. During acute inflammation, neuropeptides are released locally as a consequence of stimulation and progressive destruction of the axons. When inflammation subsides, Schwann cells lead the regeneration of the axons that result in a different structure from those of normal synovial nerve fibers.

J Bone Miner Res 1997, 12:1018-1027. Joint inflammation provokes the extensive degeneration of CGRP osseous terminals. When inflammation was reduced, CGRP axons reinnervated the eroded surface of metaphyseal bone and cartilage.

The authors demonstrate that substance P may be involved in the direct process of sensitization of primary afferents during joint inflammation, favoring nociception.

This is the first study describing the distribution of autonomic nerve fibers in the outer layer of the cartilage.
