The authors ectopically expressed each of the PPAR subtypes in fibroblast cells. Only the cells expressing PPARγ showed a strong induction of the adipocyte phenotype when treated with a PPAR activator.

    • Activation of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ promotes brown adipocyte differentiation
    • Tai TAC, Jennermann C, Brown KK, Oliver BB, MacGinnitie MA, Wilkison WO, Brown HR, Lehmann JM, Kliewer AS, Graves RA: Activation of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ promotes brown adipocyte differentiation. J Biol Chem 1996, 271:29909-29914. The authors report that treatment of rats with the thiazolinedione BRL 49653 resulted in an increase in the mass of brown fat and increased expression of the uncoupling protein in this tissue. Cell culture studies showed that BRL 49653 regulated the expression of the uncoupling protein through activation of PPARγ.
