    • Integrin-ligand binding properties govern cell migration speed through cell-substratum adhesiveness
    • This study examines the quantitative effects of matrix ligand concentration, integrin expression, and integrin activation (by expression of an 'activated' conformation) on the speed of cellular movement in vitro. The authors convincingly show that migration depends on an optimal level of adhesiveness whether achieved by relatively low matrix ligand concentration and high integrin binding or high ligand concentration and low integrin avidity. These results imply that the effects of manipulation of integrin function on cellular migration depend critically on the matrix environment in which the integrins are functioning

Demonstrates that a membrane-proximal region of caveolin has the capacity to bind multiple, distinct signalling molecules. This paper and prior work from this group establish that caveolin is an organizing agent in the membrane for regulating signalling pathways.

    • The adaptor protein Shc couples a class of integrins to the control of cell cycle progression
    • These investigators observed that the membrane protein caveolin is a possible linker between certain β1 integrins and Shc. In these studies, Shc mediated downstream signalling through ras to regulate cell cycle progression. It is interesting that the cell line used for much of this work, A431 cells, expresses large amounts the urokinase receptor

    • Integrin-dependent induction of functional urokinase receptors in primary T lymphocytes
    • This study reports the interesting observation that ligation of both T cell receptors and integrin receptors, but not of either receptor alone, results in robust upregulation of the urokinase receptor (uPAR) in a matter of hours. Ligation of either β1 (VLA4) or β2 (LFA-1) integrins was effective. The authors propose that uPAR upregulation facilitates migration of stimulated T cells through extravascular matrices
