In a cohort of more than 20,000 Norwegian women followed-up for more than a decade, women who were more physically active were less likely to develop breast cancer than women who were sedentary. This study provides valuable information on a topic that may be of tremendous importance for devising preventive strategies.

Bone mass was studied as a potential marker of long-term estrogen exposure. Using data from a long-term follow-up study of women in Framingham, MA, the cortical width of the second metacarpal was studied in relation to the future risk of breast cancer. Compared to women whose bone mass was in the lowest fourth, those in the highest fourth had a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer: Breast cancer and hormonal contraceptives: collaborative reanalysis of individual data on 53,297 women with breast cancer and 100,239 women without breast cancer from 54 epidemiologic studies. Lancet 1996, 347:1713-1727. A classic example of how a pooled analysis can help to clarify a seemingly intractable problem, this report resolves the relationship of oral contraceptive use to breast cancer risk. The results are reassuring, in that there is a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer among current users that diminishes after usage is stopped.
