    • Preventing age-related decline of gut compartmentalization limits microbiota dysbiosis and extends lifespan
    • In this study, Li et al. ingeniously generated an ‘acidless’ fly gut to mimick premature gastric decline. Acidless flies manifested early onset of metaplasia, intestinal dysbiosis and shortened lifespan, and inhibiting JAK/STAT pathway mitigates the detrimental effects of losing the acid region of the gut. This study pinpoints the contribution of JAK/STAT pathway to age-related dysbiosis and aging, with potential implications in future cancer therapy.

    • Distinct shifts in microbiota composition during Drosophila aging impair intestinal function and drive mortality
    • In this work, Clark et al. shows that intestinal microbiota dysbiosis is tightly linked to intestinal barrier dysfunction in adult Drosophila and contribute to changes in excretory function and immune gene activation. In addition, the authors show that a distinct shift in microbiota composition follows intestinal barrier dysfunction, leading to systemic immune activation and organismal death. This study reveals that intestinal microbial dysbiosis could contribute to and also predict varying rates of health decline during aging in mammals.
