This is the first study combining the majority of available GWAS data in HIVinfected individuals (n>6000). It suggests that other than CCR5D32, common genetic variants impacting HIV acquisition are likely of small effect size. This data set is perhaps most valuable for validating novel claims of genetic variants influencing acquisition, particularly from candidate gene studies.

This study shows evidence that interaction between unlinked polymorphisms impacts HIV viral load. Epistatic interactions such as this may explain an additional proportion of the heritability of HIV disease progression.

This study used viral and host genetic variation to identify regions of genetic conflict between HIV and the infected patient. Studies in which both host and pathogen genome sequences are available can enhance power for discovery and more fully explore the role of genetics in pathogenesis.
