    • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results (Table S1 in Supporting Information) indicated that the cleaned ITO surface by ultrasonic washing or plasma treatment still contained certain carbon contamination, which might originate from a brief exposure to air when the sample was stored and transferred from air to vacuum, or from small amount of contamination in the preparation chamber of the XPS system (So, S. K.; Choi, W. K.; Cheng, C. H.; Leung, L. M.; Kwong, C. F. Appl. Phys. 1999, A68, 447). However, this carbon contamination was not the source for the chemical binding site of sulfate anions, because in another experiment, the plasma-cleaned ITO surface (to remove carbon contamination to the most degree and activate ITO surface to form reactive hydroxyl sites) also showed an effective conjugation with sulfate anions after similar chemical modification, as revealed by the XPS elemental analysis (Table S1).
