    • Diels-Alder reaction of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones with cyclic dienes has been investigated in connection with the synthesis of natural products and has been reported to produce exo adducts. We suppose that the addition of the diene took predominantly place from the face opposite to the phenyl substituent at the β-position of the α-methylene lactone. This is in accordance with previously reported Diels-Alder reaction of α-methylene lactones bearing a substituent in the β position, see:, We assume a similar behaviour in the case of α-methylene-γ- butyrolactams
