The MESA study is a large, prospective cohort study designed to examine atherosclerosis risks in people with the metabolic syndrome or diabetes, across racial groups. In the paper, the utility of CAC score was compared with carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) in predicting CVD, and it was demonstrated that CAC score added incremental information to both known risk factors and cIMT.
