If the chosen manifold of low-lying states is well separated from excited states, which is usually assumed in the (pseudo)spin Hamiltonian description, then the magnetic susceptibility for low enough temperature (precluding the Boltzmann population of the excited states) and the field-dependent magnetization for not very strong magnetic fields can be treated within this formalism as well. Note, however, that there is always a contribution of temperature-independent paramagnetism to the magnetic susceptibility (Ref.) which cannot be treated by (pseudo)spin Hamiltonians.
