    • A recent study involving a collaborative effort at the Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) addressed the unique challenges posed by the Titan environment for sample handling and chemical analysis. It was concluded that a sample analysis platform based on ultrasensitive detection in small sample volumes would address the critical issues of low mass and power while maximizing science return. The KISS study team also recognized the importance of understanding sample properties at Titan pressure and temperature prior to extracting more information through chemical/physical alteration (i.e., melting, extraction, labeling reactions). A potential instrument architecture designed with these goals in mind would include a solution-state NMR (for analysis of lake samples at 94 K), followed by sample interrogation using wet chemistry and laser-induced fluorescence on a microfluidic device (which also serves as the sample distribution hub via a grid of microvalves) and finally analysis using a high-resolution mass spectrometer.
