The observed diastereoselectivity was mainly due to catalyst control, since we obtained 1:1 d.r. for this Robinson annulation step under simple KOH/EtOH reaction conditions; in addition, when racemic substrate 3 was used in the presence of chiral catalyst, there was no kinetic resolution, and we obtained 1:1 d.r. of two enantioenriched diastereomers
