    • The differential conductance is divided by the transmission factor T [e V, V, z (V)] to obtain an experimental LDOS ρ e x p (e V). From Fig., at low positive V, we used t = s = 5 eV for spectra acquired off the step edge and t = s = 4.6 eV for the spectrum from the top of the step edge. To estimate the absolute tip-sample distance z , the constant-current vertical tip displacement z (V) was measured concomitantly with d I / d V and z was calculated as z (V) = z (V) + 5 Assuming a featureless LDOS of the tip, ρ e x p (e V) should qualitatively resemble the sample LDOS ρ s (E).
