    • LexisNexis assigns articles and press releases it distributes to categories through a systematic and rigorous process called "Smart Indexing." Teams of indexers from LexisNexis regularly review the literature for new/emerging terms and concepts. As the content is loaded into the LexisNexis database, the software uses the terms and a customdesigned LexisNexis hierarchy for each entry. In addition, all content in the LexisNexis database is subjected to the new hierarchy and coding terms periodically, so older content will be coded similarly to newer content. More information on Smart Indexing is available at

    • The researchers determined that Holsti's formula was the most stringent test of intercoder reliability in this case. Even when coding is off by only one count, it is counted as a disagreement. Although Krippendorff's alpha is designed to compute reliability for ratio-level variables, due to the complex nature of its computation, it sometimes results in higher reliability than percent agreement. For example, the coders disagreed once out of 74 times on the variable Financial Results for press release datasets; one coder recorded an 87 and the other an 83, for percent agreement of 98.6. The Krippendorff's alpha for this variable, however, was 1.0 (rounded to three decimal points). The following categories reported disagreement for one out of 74 cases: Financial Performance & Reports, Financial Results, Government & Public Administration, Law & Legal System (subject categories), and Software Services & Applications (industry category).
